2000 US OPEN

6-4, 6-3, 6-3

A totally shocking match as the 20 year old Russian, Marat Safin, played masterful tennis that left one of the greatest players of all time looking like an easy opponent.  Sampras said that Safin reminded him of himself 10 years earlier when Sampras first stormed  to the US Open championship.

Safin's serve was devastatingly powerful and accurate.  He served a total of 12 aces and topped out at 136mph.  Just as important as his serve was Safin's backhand, which allowed Safin to easily pass Sampras when Sampras tried to pressure the Russian at the net.  Neither Sampras or Safin could explain why Safin was able to dominate so resoundingly, and it showed the world that Safin has it within him to be the best in the world.  If he can control his temper and frustrations, he is one of the most naturally gifted tennis players and this match reveals his greatness.  The years have not brought as many championships as a viewer of this match might predict, but  there is still time for Marat to harness his talent and become a champion again.
