2001 WIMBLEDON

4th Round

PETE SAMPRAS vs ROGER FEDERER

7-6, 5-7, 6-4, 6-7, 7-5

A young Federer shows the world on the biggest stage that he is ready to take down the giants!

Swiss prodigy Roger Federer ended the reign of Pete Sampras at Wimbledon beating the seven-time champion in the fourth round.

Sampras, gunning for his fifth straight title, which would have equalled Bjorn Borg's record, was silenced in a five-set thriller by a composed teenager with a tantalising array of shots.

Pete Sampras, before this loss, had not lost at Wimbledon in a 31-match streak stretching back to July 1996.

This match becomes even more fascinating as Federer has gone on to win 7 grand slam titles, and he is really just entering his prime.

But this matchup of tennis champions obviously showed that the young Swiss player had what it takes.

Beating the "great one" on his favorite surface on center court is a task not many players can say they accomplished.
