2004 Australian Open
Roger Federer vs David Nalbandian

QF

7-5, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3

Nalbandian and Federer had a rivalry even before turning pro.

Roger had beaten Nalbandian in their last meeting in November, but lost all five matches leading up to that, and a US Open boys final before then.

Fluid and ferocious in equal measure, Roger Federer felled his nemesis David Nalbandian on Wednesday to reach his first Australian Open semi-final.

Nalbandian came into this match having not dropped a set, but in a tight match it was Federer who won the vital points.

At 5-5 in the first set, Federer faced double break point but ripped four straight aces to hold.  Nalbandian put some pressure on by taking the third set, but Federer broke Nalbandian's next service game to go up 2-0 in the fourth. He rode the advantage to finish off the match with his 20th ace.

A close match but Federer shows he is ready to win major tournaments by coming through in the big points and serving his way out of trouble when he gets down.
