2005 Pacific Life Open

Roger Federer  v  Lleyton Hewitt

6-2, 6-4, 6-4

This win stretches Federer's record to 17 consecutive finals without defeat and gave him his seventh title in eight tournaments dating back to the US Open.

"My game has a lot to do with footwork," said Federer. "When I'm moving well, I play well. This week I've played and felt fantastic.

Hewitt said: "I probably went for a little more than I needed to. But against a guy like Roger, his movement is superior.

"He makes you go for that little bit extra every time because he really does cut off the angles extremely well.

It took two extraordinary lobs and a reflex volley to hang on to his serve in a miraculous point midway through the second set, but Federer was already in control.

This match includes the point of the YEAR ... a gripping rally in which they pushed each other from side to side with over 40-plus strokes!!!  Hewitt twice forced Federer back with well-placed topspin lobs before falling into a forehand volley that somehow went over the net as he tumbled to the ground.
