2005 US OPEN

3rd Round

JAMES BLAKE  v  RAFAEL NADAL

6-4 4-6 6-3 6-1

James Blake produced an electrifying display to shatter Rafael Nadal's title dreams in front of a raucous crowd packed inside Arthur Ashe stadium. The momentum looked to be with Nadal when he made it one set all but Blake raised his game to take the third, hitting 10 winners and just two errors. The Spaniard wilted in the fourth and, after taking his first match point, Blake fell to his knees in disbelief.  Blake's story is fit for a movie... broken vertebrae in his neck 1 year ago on the practice courts, his father died of cancer, he got a case of shingles that temporarily paralyzed his sight, hearing, and muscles in his face.  His ranking fell to #210 and he needed a wildcard to enter the US Open.  Blake matched the French Open champion's speed and showed that the Spaniard wasn't the only one who can make spectacular shots. A lot of their volleys and passing shots on the run were fit for all time highlight reels.
