2006 DAVIS CUP
USA v CHILE
ANDY RODDICK v FERNANDO GONZALEZ
4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-2
Roddick got his chance for redemption after losing his first match against Massu earlier in the week.
Andy Roddick was able to rally back after losing the first set to seal the victory for team USA which advances them to the semifinals of the Davis Cup in 2006. Gonzalez always plays his best in Davis Cup matches and he came out firing winners past the American. Even though the USA chose a fast grass surface, it did not bother the Chilean who played fantastic grass court tennis. There were some very tense points in this match with some questionable calls from the chair umpire that seemed to benefit Roddick. Gonzalez exploded after a couple bad calls and smashed his racquet on the net post. Roddick meanwhile, was upset with the Chilean coach, who kept standing up during the points which Roddick felt was unfair and distracting. At times, it seemed a brawl would break out during the match, but tempers eventually subsided.
After hitting a forehand volley on match point - his 50th winner of the day - Roddick celebrated the moment with a slide across the grass court of the Mission Hills Country Club. The USA will play Russia in the semifinals in September.
