USA v RUSSIA

ANDY RODDICK v DIMITRY TURSUNOV

6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 3-6, 17-15

Russia eliminated the USA when Tursunov beat Andy Roddick 17-15 in the 5th set of this marathon match.  After 4 hours and 48 minutes of grueling play on the clay court surface, Roddick finally relented.  Even though clay is his least favorite surface because it diminishes his power

serve and forehand game, Roddick was still very disappointed that he was not able to pull out the win for USA after a great comeback from 2 sets down.  Roddick felt like he let team USA down, but his heroic effort shows his tremendous heart.  Roddick knows that to win the Davis Cup in future years, he must learn to play better on clay since every country will pick that surface.  Tursunov, for his part, played outstanding tennis, even when his nerves began to affect his play.  Tursunov was also a surprise substitute player since the Russian captain picked him over the better clay courter, Nikolai Davydenko, who was still recovering from exhaustion he experienced in a tournament in China a few days earlier.

Russia has a new tennis hero, and Tursunov will play a big factor when the Russians take on the team from Argentina in the Davis Cup Finals in December.
