2006 MONTE CARLO MASTERS
RAFAEL NADAL v ROGER FEDERER
6-2, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6
Nadal powered his way to the Monte Carlo masters series title for the 2nd consecutive year. The Spaniard continued his mastery of the clay courts and over Federer. Federer felt that he played better on this day then he did when they played at the French Open, and that he is learning how to play Nadal on the clay. But for nw, Nadal showed Roger that he still has much to learn to beat him on his favorite surface. Nadal ran down every ball and put it back in play with giant topspin. Rafael mixed in some spectacular passing shots when Federer ventured to the net and when the Swiss player stayed back, Nadal would deftly place a dropshot softly over the net.
Nadal now has a 4-1 record against the Swiss world number one, and has chalked up a remarkable 42 successive wins on clay.
The left-hander is third on the all-time list of successive clay court wins behind Guillermo Vilas (53) and Bjorn Borg (46). Soon it seems he will be at the top of that list. Nadal played like "el toro" today, pushing Federer around with his powerful forehand. A clay court masterpiece!
