2006 PACIFIC LIFE OPEN

3rd Round

RAFAEL NADAL v MARDY FISH

Rafa dominated the first set, as Fish struggled with his serve. The second set was more even, as Mardy became more aggressive. Although Rafa had breakpoint chances, they remained on serve until 5-4. Mardy saved three matchpoint on his serve, but Rafa closed it out on the fourth.
Fish may have lost the match, but his change of tactics in the second set to serve and volley was a smart choice.

If Federer was watching, he would be wise to learn from Fish that getting to the net and making Nadal run across the entire court to even attempt

a passing shot is a smart way to play.  We will have to see if Federer employs his net game more often if  Federer and Nadal meet in Indian Wells.
For his part, Nadal is as quick as ever and ever eager to run down balls and use his tremendous topspin to baffle his opponents.  His serve is much improved and Fish was never very close to breaking his serve all match.
