2006 PACIFIC LIFE OPEN
MARAT SAFIN v CARLOS MOYA
Two former #1 ranked ATP players met in the 2nd round of the Pacific Life Open.
Safin, just coming back from a lengthy absence caused by a knee injury, has been playing and moving well and still has a strong serve that often clocks at 130mph.
Moya has been playing well too lately and is coming off a tournament win on the clay at the Copa Telmex.
This matchup was intriguing as both players are big hitters with good mobility for their size.
Moya took the first set by playing much better in the tie-breaker, but Safin began to dominate for the remainder.
Moya was a great test for Safin and the match contained a bunch of exciting points that demonstrated the athleticism of both players.
By winning, Safin shows that he is back in contention to win this tournament and will be a tough test for Nalbandian and Federer in the days ahead.
