2006 ROME

Final

      RAFAEL NADAL v ROGER FEDERER

6-7,7-6,6-4,2-6,7-6

In a claycourt masterpiece, the top 2 players in the world battled on the red clay in preparation for the French Open for more than 5 hours.

Federer, who had been playing below top form, was in remarkable form and used his forehand brilliantly to pressure Nadal.  But Nadal, who matched Guillermo Vilas with his 53rd consecutive clay court win, would never quit and never slowed during this amazing marathon match.

The consistency of Nadal's shots combined with his tireless scrambling proved just enough to overcome an inspired Federer.

Federer was up in the 5th set and had multiple match points to win the match in the 5th set tiebreaker, but was unable to finish.

This was the best match of their recent rivalry and one can only hope to see the next chapter unfold in Paris next month.

Federer will have a daunting challenge of trying to break the clay court streak of the seemingly invincible Nadal while trying to win the lone

Grand Slam trophy that has eluded him so far!

Truly a timeless match! Bellisimo! Magnifico!
