2006 COPA TELMEX

Final

CARLOS MOYA v FILIPPO VOLANDRI

7-6, 6-4

Carlos Moya relived some of his glory days of being the number one player in the ATP by winning the Copa Telmex in Buenes Aires, Argentina.

It was the third time he was the champion in this tournament, and he has a lot of fan support cheering him on.

Moya used his experience to outplay Volandri.  Moya's backhand was still his very apparent weakness, and the Italian has some success attacking that side in the first set.  But Moya was able to outplay him in the tiebreak and imposed his will more easily in the second set to win the tournament.

The fifth-seeded Spaniard also won in Buenos Aires in 1995, his first career title, and 2003. He lost the 2004 final to Guillermo Coria.

It was the 29-year-old Moya's first title of the year after losing the Chennai final to Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic and 19th overall.

Sixth seed Volandri, ranked one place above Moya at number 33 in the world, broke serve to lead 5-3 in the first set and then had two set points in the 10th game.

Moya, French Open winner in 1998, fought back to force a tiebreak which he won 8-6. He had little trouble clinching the match in the second set.

"It's incredible. I played with confidence and very well," said Moya. "I managed to save the first set and I was lucky to break his serve and level the score."
