2006 ROGERS MASTERS
ROGER FEDERER v FERNANDO GONZALEZ
6-1 5-7 6-3
He was tested by the Chilean 15th seed but extended his winning hardcourt run in North America to 53 matches.
Federer was able to fend off the challenge of Gonzalez, but the Chilean showed some new tweaks to his tennis game.
Fernando always used to stand behind the baseline and hit hit forehand as hard as possible, but now he is using more
of the court and using approach shots to end points at the net when he gets an advantage in baseline rallies.
Federer won the first set in 20 minutes, limiting Gonzalez to 10 points. But the Chilean improved his service game,
held without relative trouble and broke Federer in the last game of the second set.
Late in the 3rd set, Federer broke the serve of Gonzalez and then gained the momentum to close out the match.
I struggled in the second and third... it was a tough match," said the Swiss.
"After a one-month break and no tournaments, to come back and be in the final is all I could ask," he added.
Federer has had to play numerous difficult opponents in Toronto and the final is now set between the Swiss champion
and the very talented young Frenchman, Richard Gasquet.
