2006 US OPEN
ANDRE AGASSI v BENJAMIN BECKER
5-7, 7-6, 4-6, 5-7
Andre Agassi's 20 year career and brilliant run at the 2006 US Open came to an end as he was defeated by German wildcard Benjamin Becker.
Andre clearly looked less than 100 percent as his back problems had forced him to undergo several anti-inflammatory injections in the days leading up to this match. Becker meanwhile was playing very good tennis. Becker, no relation to Boris, is not very tall at 5'10 but was able to hit huge serves that reached up to 139mph! Agassi fought valiantly and secured the second set, but that was his last gasp and when Becker kept playing hard, Agassi knew soon that his career was soon to be over.
A 5 minute standing ovation was given by the fans in attendance, and Agassi could not stop his his tears as the emotion of the day came over him.
Still crying, Agassi paid a sentimental tribute to his fans.
"The scoreboard shows that I lost today, but what it doesn't show is what I found," he said.
"Over the last 20 years I have found loyalty, you have pulled me through on court and also in life.
"I have found inspiration - you have willed me to succeed - and I have found generosity.
"I thank you and I will take you and the memory with me for the rest of my life."
