2006 US OPEN
LLEYTON HEWITT v RICHARD GASQUET
6-4 6-4 4-6 3-6 6-3
Lleyton Hewitt moved on in the US Open in a bizarre marathon match. Frenchman Richard Gasquet was being outplayed in the first 2 sets, but came all the way back to force a deciding 5th set. Unfortunately for Gasquet, his legs were betraying him. He repeatedly called for the trainer, but the muscle cramps in his thighs looked like they were going to force him to retire from the match. Gasquet tried to play through the pain, hobbling around the court. However, every couple of points, he would muster up enough strength to hit a ferocious winner. A lesser player might have had
a mental letdown, but Hewitt soldiered through for the win. It was a thrilling match to see Gasquet hit shot after shot even while barely able to move to the ball. A great performance by both players!
