2006 WIMBLEDON

Final

                AMELIE MAURESMO  v   JUSTINE HENIN-HARDENNE

2-6, 6-3, 6-4

In a rematch of their previous match in the finals of the Australian Open (where Justine infamously retired due to a stomach ailment) they played a hard fought match at Wimbledon.

Mauresmo might have received a gift when she won her first grand slam final, but her Wimbledon trophy will never be questioned.

Once known as a choker for her previous failures to win due to nervouseness, she has also put that moniker aside as she battled back after losing the first set to win the match.  Mauresmo was ahead in the second set when Henin began a comeback.  But after dropping a few games, Mauresmo found a way to win the set and this helped her carry the match.

The French and Belgian women both play beautiful classic style of tennis, with one-handed backhands and even a fondness for the serve and volley style that has almost vanished from the sport.
