2006 AUSTRALIAN OPEN
ANDY RODDICK v MARCOS BAGHDATIS
6-4, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4
Marcos Baghdatis produced a magical display of shot-making to shock second seed Andy Roddick 6-4 1-6 6-3 6-4 in the Australian Open fourth round.
The Cypriot refused to be bullied by Roddick's power and delighted an enthralled crowd on Rod Laver Arena by unleashing 63 winners.
The momentum looked to have swung in Roddick's favor when he leveled the match by taking the second set 6-1.
Baghdatis looked to have studied Federer's approach to diffusing the power of Roddick.
He seemed to know where the Americans serves were going and was content to just slice them back in play and then wait for his opportunity to unleash a monster shot after dragging Andy from side to side on the baseline.
Roddick seemed somewhat beleaguered that he could not submit the lower ranked opponent.
Maybe it was the slow court surface, but Roddick's strokes seemed to have just a bit too much topspin and he played a bit too defensively to pressure his opponent and Marcos took full advantage.
Baghdatis ate up Roddick's ground strokes and produced a virtual 3 hour highlight reel of amazing winners. A fantastic match to watch, unless you are named Andy Roddick!
As for Andy, it seems like it is back to the drawing board as more and more players are copying Federer's style with success against him.
