2006 AUSTRALIAN OPEN
ROGER FEDERER v TOMMY HAAS
6-4, 6-0, 3-6, 4-6, 6-2
"The way he played in the fifth set," said Haas, "you've just got to tip your hat and say, 'Unbelievable'."
Haas fell behind early by 2 sets and most thought it was going to be another easy win for Federer. But the Swiss champion
faltered in the next 2 sets and had to raise his game to overcome the challenge of an invigorated Tommy Haas. Haas' renewed confidence was aided by a previous win over Federer in a warm-up event in Kooyong just a few weeks ago. Haas again showed he has the shots to trouble Federer.
Although Federer later proclaimed he was never in danger of losing, it did show that players can take him to 5 sets down under in Australia. Now that the remaining field knows this, maybe they can be like Safin last year and possibly take the #1 player down? But maybe Federer was just having a little fun with Haas...
Either way, Haas forced Federer to play his best tennis, which might help Federer in the semis and final match.
It was high quality tennis and high drama tennis, and anybody who prevents him winning here will have to play to a standard they have never previously reached.
