2007  FRENCH OPEN

                ROGER FEDERER     v    NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO

7-5, 7-6, 7-6

Federer had won all 8 previous encounters versus Davydenko, but the Russian proved to be a tough test on the clay of Roland Garros.

Davydenko is possible the fittest player on the tour, using his grinding game to wear down his opponents from the baseline.

Against Federer, Davydenko tried to take the ball early and overpower him.  The strategy was causing Federer to be rushed on his shots

and Davydenko also took a lot more chances to hit winners past the Swiss great.

But Federer persevered and came up with incredible shots at all the crucial moments to get the win.

TDW is still in shock after watching the second serve ace that Federer hit that bounced 3 feet over Davydenko's head!!!!   Unbelievable!

Davydenko played much like Agassi did in trying to force the action, but admitted afterward that it was just too difficult to maintain that

level long enough against possibly the best ever.  Federer now gets his long awaited chance to face off against Nadal in a finals rematch

and to make good on this chance for the career Grand Slam to enhance his status among the all time-tennis greats.
