2007 AUSTRALIAN OPEN
FERNANDO GONZALEZ v LLEYTON HEWITT
6-2 6-2 5-7 6-4
LLEYTON Hewitt was unceremoniously tossed from the Australian Open last night by Fernando Gonzalez and his ferocious forehand.
Eliminated by Chilean powerhouse Gonzalez, Hewitt was left to ponder the nature of a shattering defeat that owed much to inconsistent serving.
Hewitt was brutally shoved aside on Rod Laver Arena by Gonzalez's raw strength and aggression. If not for a trademark mid-match Hewitt revival, this would have been a rout.
Statistics underlined Gonzalez's incredible accuracy from the baseline. At the end of the second set, he had made only two unforced errors for the match.
Gonzalez used his slice to diminish Hewitt's ability to counterpunch against pace, and Hewitt was lured into the net where he was routinely passed by the incredibly
accurate Chilean. Gonzalez finished with 66 winners to Hewitt's 44.
