2007 AUSTRALIAN OPEN
ANDY RODDICK v MARAT SAFIN
7-6 2-6 6-4 7-6
Andy Roddick last night emerged victorious from a gripping and controversial four-set battle with former champion Marat Safin at the Australian Open.
Roddick had to weather an enormous fight from 2005 Australian Open winner Safin, who thundered down 21 aces, often at crucial times, and mixed brute power with skill and athleticism.
He also displayed his temperamental nature, as Safin argued with both the umpire and the tournament referee. Roddick kept his focus during Safin's long tantrums and was able to finish him off to advance.
Roddick was not excited about having to play Safin so early in the tournament.

"I had to lift my level and I definitely did otherwise I would be going home.
